The law that gives men authority over their wives is the true Law. God's Law. God only wrote on a rock once, and Moses broke it. Then when Moses went to get another one, God told him that he had to write it down himself this time, because God wasn't going to write another one.
The Law of God is not confined to paper, nor wholly expressed on stone tablets. The Bible says that His (God's) law is written on our hearts, and that no men anywhere are without excuse (when it comes to breaking His law). The problem I think you may be having is the misuse and abuse we've all seen from the man being head of his home. God gave man authority over his home - not so man could be exalted, but so that God could be exalted. That's the purpose of authority - to bring glory to the one in ultimate authority - God. So if I use my authority for any other purpose - I am out of God's will/plan/design. Furthermore I leave myself open or bare - to be attacked by the enemy, because I am in a sense forfeiting God's covering. So being head is not in and of itself a good thing - it is a fearful thing. Because God will hold me accountable - not only for myself, but for how I protect and govern my family.
A little hint here - this is also the purpose of a king. A king (under God's law) does not come into power for his own glorification, but for the glorification of God. And how would God be most glorified? If the king is well and good, and his subjects are suffering, wretched, blind and poor? No, but quite the opposite!
I don't know if you're still reading this, but you've kind of hit on a subject that I feel like God is giving me a real education on right now. I'm trying to compile my thoughts for a possible book. The subject would be Power vs. Authority. I don't know how many people out there are really aware of how Power and Authority actually
work. The truth is sorely misunderstood, but at the same time it's pretty awesome and liberating! The whole battle - from the beginning has been AUTHORITY. And that will be the final battle as well - over authority. Can we (man and Satan) combine enough power to overthrow God, and claim true authority? Because all authority that is not received from God has been derived from power. And authority received from power is only an illusion of authority.
There is only one Law and one Lawgiver, and His name is God Almighty. Creator of heaven and earth. He is the one true righteous judge. Any law of man that is contrary to God's Law is not to be obeyed nor adhered to.
