Authority flows down so that glory can flow up. The purpose that God gives men authority is so that men will in turn be able to give glory to God. God does not give men authority so that men can receive glory. He gives men authority so that He can receive glory. He gives men authority to set the captives free.
We've got the whole concept backwards. We think authority flows up, so that glory can flow down. Men believe that they receive authority from men, so that men can in turn rule over each other while the subjects bring glory to the one in authority.
I've been told that pastors receive authority, because we chose to submit to them. This is absolutely a false premise, because true authority can only flow down not up. However, power, conversely can flow up. We can give men power over us. And that is what men desire - power and control.
But Jesus says, it shall not be so with you. That's not the reason He gives authority to men.
